The food industry has been relatively increasing, this is in connection with the growing tourism industry and local demand in the Island province of Siquijor.  Myla Diaz, the owner and baker, is an aspiring entrepreneur who dreamed to be one of the best bakers on the island of Siquijor. With much dedication and passion, she trained and developed her skills in baking by attending baking workshops and seminars.

Myla Diaz started baking last January 2017, she baked cupcakes and steamed “Puto” Flan all in the comforts of her home and decided to sell it to various schools. During this time, she received both positive and negative feedback on her products and used these as motivation to improve and develop even further. In 2019, she registered her business to DTI and committed full-time to her business.

The COVID19 did not directly affect her business as its current market is focused on the locals. Regardless of the situation, customers tend to buy her products on occasions such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and other celebrations.   Her annual income was ranging from P200k – CY 2018 and P1.1M for 2019. These figures indicate that the business is growing and developing. Currently, she has already marked up to 400k as of September 2020 in spite of the current situation of the economy.

To further develop her entrepreneurial capabilities, DTI-SPO invited her to the program Kapatid Mentor Me (KMME) where she was able to learn new strategies from the mentor and her big brothers in business. Moreover, Negosyo Center guided her throughout the program especially during the preparation of the Business Improvement Plan (BIP). She stated that “I’m going to apply whatever knowledge and ideas I learned in the program to my small business, and I’m grateful that I was one of the businesses who was invited in this very rare opportunity.” She committed herself to the success of the business. She was also invited to various seminars like Food Safety, GMP, and LTO-FDA training which is very important in her line of business.

As of the moment, she is one of the most sought-after bakers in the Island, whose cakes do not only taste great but look great as well. She now has 4 apprentices who have consistently trained to help her in the production. Myla does not see her apprentices as potential competitors but rather a legacy that she was able to leave.
